Micháel’s Injury and Current Health status
When Micháel was in his early 20’s, he began to suffer from a severe form of Arthritis. The condition resulted in Micháel having restricted movement and severe pain.
In characteristic fashion, Micháel took a positive approach and worked extremely hard in maximising his mobility. After two hip replacements and huge exercising effort, Micháel had reached a stage last year where he was cycling 12 miles along Lake Michigan as exercise to sustain his mobility. At this stage he was in very good health.
Unfortunately in September 2005, Micháel had an accidental fall at his home in Chicago, USA. He sustained a C-5 spinal cord injury from the damage to his neck. For Micháel this means he has quadriplegia and is paralysed. Micháel has been in the hospital since his accident last year.
Immediately after the accident, he had a surgical procedure carried out to place brackets in his neck because of the C-5 injury. Micháel experienced complications with this procedure, which caused a hole in his oesophagus. His medical team felt the brackets had to be removed for the oesophagus to heal. He is due to have surgery again at the end of August.
In spite of all of this Micháel is in good spirits and makes all his own medical decisions. He continues to be one of the Mayo football team’s most loyal supporters and has watched all Mayo’s Championship match’s this year on video in his Hospital bed.
