Micháel Molloy
Micháel Molloy is a native of Tourmakeady, County Mayo. He is what is often described as “a local hero”, mainly due to his exploits on the football field for our GAA Club Tourmakeady, St. Jarlaths College and in the Mayo County Jersey. He started playing football for Tourmakeady Intermediate Team at the tender age of 16 and played a starring role in the Intermediate County Final in 1982 when Tourmakeady won the County Championship.
That year was a memorable one for Micháel on the sportsfields of Ireland as he won three major Football Honours’s (listed below). The highlight of that year was winning an All Ireland Colleges Medal with St. Jarlath’s College playing at centre forward alongside another outstanding Mayo footballer called Padraic Brogan. The photo on the front page captures Micháel in full flight, scoring a vital goal for St. Jarlath’s when they beat St. Mels in that years All Ireland semi-final.
| Team | Competition |
|---|---|
| St. Jarlaths College | All Ireland Colleges Winners (Team Photo) |
| Tourmakeady Intermediate | Mayo County Championship winners |
| Tourmakeady Junior | All Ireland Gaeltacht Winners |
Micháel went on to play for the Mayo Minor team in 1982 and Captained the Minor team in 1983. He also played for the Mayo U-21 Team for three years in 1984, 1985 and 1986.
Micháel emigrated to the USA in 1990, but returned home on holiday to Tourmakeady every Christmas. He also flew in from the USA to support the Mayo Senior team in 1996, 1997 and 2004 and like the rest of us awaits Sam’s return to the West. Though Micháel won many Honours playing football, the biggest prize he has won is the countless number of friends he made through his sportsmanship on the field and being a true gentleman off the field.
